Our Testimonies

There is nothing in the world more devastating
to a parent than to have a prodigal child.

  Testimony of Rita Moritz:

Romans 10:20 "...I was found of them that sought me not..."

With my husband in Viet Nam and worried about money and my babies, I wasn’t patient when someone knocked on my door one summer morning in 1969. I didn’t know it was the beginning of something that would change my life forever.

Wally Beebe and a bus captain named Glen Newberry were visiting for Glen’s Sunday School bus route. Although I was reluctant, I finally agreed to let the kids ride the bus to church. The children loved it, so I continued to let them go.

That was a tough year, and just when I thought it couldn’t get worse, it did. One after another, the kids became ill enough to be hospitalized, and there were four hospital stays among the three kids in five weeks. The last hospital stay was for my baby, who was seriously ill. Then, with money already tight, I lost my job because I was at the hospital.

The hospital staff suggested I try to get my husband brought home on compassionate leave. They told me to get a letter from my priest or pastor, and I immediately thought of Wally Beebe. He was glad to provide that letter, and he invited me to church, telling me gently, “The only reason you’re carrying this alone is because you choose to.”

I visited that church several Sundays, sitting way in the back and leaving quickly after the service was over. Then came the day when Bro. Beebe preached on being born again. As he was preaching, I realized that the burden I couldn’t carry anymore wasn’t my husband being gone, losing my job, or the kids being sick. It was the burden of my own sin.

Baptist churches have an “invitation” at the end of the service so people can pray at the altar or talk to the pastor or a counselor. When the invitation was given that morning, I went forward and received Christ as my own personal Savior. I say “personal” because it wasn’t about whether I was Catholic or Methodist or Episcopalian, or even Baptist. It wasn’t whether I had been baptized or made my first communion or confirmation.

It was about realizing that, regardless of anything else that was going on in my life, my greatest burden was that I was a sinner in need of forgiveness. I also realized that Jesus Christ paid the penalty for my sin by dying on the cross, and I made a decision to turn my heart and my life over to Him. It’s been 45 years since that day, but I’ve never gotten over what Christ did for me.

I don’t know what’s going on in your life or what burdens you are carrying. I don’t know who or what has broken your heart. But I know, just as my friend said so long ago, “the only reason you’re carrying this alone is because you choose to.” Perhaps, like me, the heaviest of your burdens is your own sin. Maybe it’s time you turned to the One who can do something about it. You can settle it once and for all by praying a simple prayer like the following:

"Lord, I know that I’m a sinner. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins and rose again. I want to receive Him now as my own personal Savior. Please come into my heart and forgive my sins and make me a new person. In Jesus’ name, Amen."

Challenge for Today: If you have prayed that prayer, would you send me an email to:  rita@preciousprodigal.com so I can rejoice with you?

If you have questions about any of this, I would love to hear from you as well. I will make every effort to respond to your email and answer your questions.
